2012 Free Agency begins next Tuesday, March 13th at 4pm. The first in a series of looks at positions the Raiders may target.
2011 starters: Stanford Routt and varied
Offseason Moves so far:
cut Stanford Routt
signed Brandon Underwood
On the Roster:
DeMarcus Van Dyke
Terrail Lambert – signed to reserve/future contract 1/3/2012
Restricted Free Agents: None
Unrestricted Free Agents:
Projected 2012 Starters: Chimdi Chekwa? Michael Huff? Nothing set at this time
The Raiders currently have only 4 players under contract for the 2012 season that are designated as CB – excluding Terrail Lambert who is likely a practice squad player, if anything. The team also may move FS Michael Huff over to play corner as he has some experience with the position.
Chris Johnson is on contract next season for $3.5 million, which likely either makes him a cut or a restructure depending on how much the new leadership likes him. He isn't expected to be back for the $3.5 million he's contracted to make, certainly.
Obviously this, then, counts as one of the highest if not the highest position of need for the team. The Raiders will be in the market for at least one veteran CB to come in and compete.
Initially, many beat writers and fans looked at the connection of new coach Dennis Allen and free agent CB Tracy Porter from their time together in New Orleans. However, with the new allegations that many of the Saints defenders had bounties on knocking players out, this may not be a good idea.
I can't decide if the bounties story will help or hurt the chances for Porter. It makes sense that the Raiders would be wary of signing Porter because he may face a suspension in the future. However, other teams will also be potentially wary and that may drop his price and if the Raiders like Porter a small suspension in one of the years of the contract shouldn't be too much a concern. So, I'm leaning towards the Raiders still potentially pursuing Porter, assuming that Allen likes him.
Porter isn't the best CB on the market – that designation is likely given to either Titans CB Cortland Finnegan or Chiefs CB Brandon Carr, depending on who you talk to. The next biggest name on the market is Niners' CB Carlos Rogers.
Best of the rest: Terrell Thomas of the Giants was a starter, but he seems likely to re-sign with New York at this point as the interest is there on both sides. Chris Carr of the Ravens is a possible Raiders prospect. He played with the team from 2005-2011 before a year in TN and three in Baltimore. He could provide depth for the team and has played in both starter and backup roles.
The Raiders may also look to one of their veterans that is going to be a free agent or restructure Chris Johnson for depth and look towards the draft.
On the roster already, both Chimdi Chekwa and DeMarcus Van Dyke showed promise last year and both could push for a starting spot. Of the two, Chekwa looked the most polished in training camp but injuries set him back throughout the year. Brandon Underwood is an unknown but he was cut from Green Bay so that doesn't bode well for his starting chances.
Who do you want the Raiders to sign, if anyone, this free agency period?

Cap may be hard for us this season cuz of a lot of dead money/guaranteed money for cut players, but we shouldn't have to worry about having nearly this much next offseason. Too bad we can't just make some of it counts towards next season to free up a lot more cap space. I doubt next year's free agent class will be anywhere near as good as this year's class is.
in a perfect world, Chekwa & DVD start and Huff slides to nickel and we get a vet for # 4 or CJ restructures.... Caveat is what do McK & DA think is our biggest need that can be filled via FA. This remains to be seen....could be Wells from Houston to play center and help teach zone blocking or may be Porter @ CB to help teach Defense.... What we do know is that DA will get some of his guys on D to teach - starters or back ups...gonna be fun!
I just want to go on record and say i think dvd will be an absolute stud next yr if he stays healthy. I watched him run stride for stride with fitzgerald and colston he got burnt cause he didn't look for the ball but next time i saw him which was mid season he fixed that but got injured and shepherd took his place so we never saw how good he can be. He is our next nnamdi i swear! Thoughts???
Think the "bountygate" lost some of it's urgency when all the other teams were busted too - basically every team Gregg Williams coached. Hard to sort out the mess now. More likely Williams gets suspended (or fined - whatever) and the league hands down new rules to try to curtail the practice in the future. I wouldn't let that issue stand in the way of signing a good player - a suspension is a temporary thing.
It's a bad sign if Lito's still on the team when camp rolls around.
I would really like Porter, but I don't think Chris Carr is any better than who we have on the roster now. Another Ravens CB who could be dirt cheap and has the potential to be a better starter than Carr (presuming he has fully recovered from his past injuries) is Dominique Foxworth. Then there is of course Richard Marshall who seems to get mentioned a lot around here. A couple other cheaper CB's I wouldn't mind seeing us target are the Bears Zackary Bowman, Jarrett Bush from the Packers and Rodrick Hood from the Rams.
Another guy I would to see us sign is Lardarius Webb. Webb is however a Restricted Free Agent and I wouldn't be surprised if he carries a first round tender from the Ravens.
Tracy Porter would be a very good signing by the Raiders, regardless of any suspensions involved. I really think that the Raiders will most likely draft a cornerback with their first pick in this years draft, and look for them to trade up to get the best possible CB that they can find. Will the Raiders trade McFadden to get into the late first round??? I think they might, and if they do, don't be surprised if they make a move for a guy like Dre Kirkpatrick or Janoris Jenkins.
Good overview! However, i don't see the BountyGate as much of a hindering regarding Tracy Porter - allegedly between 22 and 27 players from the Saints Defense is involved (all of the D most likely), and there is no way that Goodell hands out suspensions to all of them! Most likely the key Bounty Hunters (special situations that can be proven or big names that is suspected to be a large part of it) will risk a suspension, while the rest (therein Porter) presumably will "only" be handed a hefty fine to prove a point!
This is a key focus point for Goodell, so it will probably be a big circus with punishment that will be made to statuate an example, but suspending the entire Defense will hinder NO from participating in any games until they have their Defense back, and that would be critical to the tournament as any forefeited games would be criticized by teams competing with the announced winners! Potentially NO could be hit with deducted points, but that would not affect the players, as is also the case for any lost draft picks!
Could be that a suspension would be put in place to touch the offseason for the involved players, but as it would heighten the chance of injuries this probably will not happen either!
I would think that only a handfull of players will be suspended and the rest will be punished financially!
Adding Carr and Porter would be great for us! Hope we will see some valuable signings to start out FA!

Wells is the Packers Center. Chris Myers is the Texans Center. Either way I would love to see Myers signed (Wells would be my second option). Otherwise Wiz should be the starter at Center.
I agree he showed great improvement and if he continues on that development then he could really shine. It will help that Johnnie Lyn is suppose to be a very good secondary coach. It's going to be an interesting off season and I for one cannot wait to see how this team looks come week one.
No, probably not. Maybe slightly more than vet minimum. Downside of his career. RT @Crosier2432 do u think trufaunt will be expensive?
@Harder2000 Good point in that Goodell probably won't suspend all players but it could happen. Especially for ones who participated heavily. Hard to know if Porter was one of those at this point. Still a risk, albeit probably not too big a one.
@AsherMathews I think he would be a good pick up for us. Not expencive. Teach our young guys. Plays ok. Could take less money than cj lol.
@AsherMathews no prob I like it! This is exactly what I expect to happen with wimbley and curry. Henderson cut and were under cap lol.
Good news, I like Huff. Seymour wasn't going anywhere this ssn so makes sense he'd restructure. Thanks 4 the heads up @Crosier2432
@AsherMathews hey look at what I just retweeted! Just cut 11 mill off cap. Kinda hurts a bit next season. Well see what happens w seymore
Hope your right. #Raiders have to make it worth it, tho RT @Crosier2432 I think he will restructure and not take a pay cut. So hell stay.
I like ur optimism on Wimbley but it's a long shot. @Crosier2432 I didn't list them because if curry and wimbley are restructured.
@AsherMathews @Crosier2432 ok ok lol... so we need to fill a few spots... but I'm confident we'll pick some good players up!
@AsherMathews I didn't list them because if curry and wimbley are restructured. Then I don't list it over cb and guard. We need starters
The other really weak spot for starters, LB, will be covered tomorrow, I'm hoping. starters mostly set other spots @winstone78 @Crosier2432
@AsherMathews @Crosier2432 fair point...most of the starters are good.. I will rephrase my last tweet :)
Not at CB. Who's starting now? Chekwa and DVD? Underwood? would like a better option competing. @winstone78 @Crosier2432
@AsherMathews @Crosier2432 to be honest we need depth players anyway. Starters are fine. Just when they start getting injured!
Nah, #Raiders'll get under cap - they have to. Prob won't sign a huge name, butcan get few impact players @Crosier2432
@AsherMathews I def thought we were moving to more zone this year. Idk well see. Glad to see someone not doom and gloom over this cap
I'm not up on Trufont - not a man guy, I think - more zone D. depends on what system Allen is running. But I'm not against it @Crosier2432
