The Raiders continue to adjust the "out of whack" contracts that GM Reggie McKenzie referred to earlier this offseason. Today, the Raiders cut CB Chris Johnson and FS and special teams standout Hiram Eugene, saving approximately $6 million against the salary cap. Johnson was once in contention to be a starter at CB but struggled all of last year even in a backup role. This may partially have been due to a recurring injury. Eugene was expected to be a backup safety and a gunner on special teams but hurt his hip in preseason and missed the entire year. Both cuts were expected. It's possible that either could return to the team at a lower amount but that seems unlikely at this point. If memory serves, the Raiders currently have only three CBs on the roster at this time - second year players DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa and recently signed Brandon Underwood.
This was expected, but man we are getting short on DB's! This will be a whole new looking secondary I think by the way things are looking.
Man, that is tough to only have three CBs and five DBs total on the roster. The secondary has got to be a focal point during free agency. Come on Tracy Porter and Richard Marshall..... They could move Huff as NB and sign Landry as SS and move Branch to FS with Marshall and Porter as starting CBs...... I can dig that.....
@nilbymouth Well, I expect a lot of UDFA to come at the secondary. I think DVD and Chimdi Chekwa will be the starters and Huff and Branch to keep starting at safety. Dennis Allen is a DB specialist and he brought a couple of really good secondary coaches, so I think they'll try to polish those guys into an elite squad.
I really think we will target a Free Agent DB. Not a huge name guy, but a biggish name. Tracy Porter wouldn't surprise me at all. RIchard Marshall could be another.
In Porter's defense I have not heard / seen his name mentioned once in regards to this bounty fiasco. I mean it's not like he is known as much of a hitter to be able to lay a hit on a player to put him out! The only DB I have heard mention of is Darren Sharper and that was regarding taking shots at his buddy Favre which is a shame because I always had the up most respect for Sharper. If there were any players that I think would not be involved I would say it would be the CB's.
@nilbymouth Porter seemed possible but with this bounty thing, I think he's gonna be scourged by unfair penalties. The league will be hunting the heads of every player who came out from the Saints and becoming a Raider won't help his case much. I'm sure Allen and Reggie knows that and I don't see them taking that shot.
Now, about Richard Marshall, @JarrodRollins and I talked about it before. I think he's quite a decent nickelback, but I don't see him becoming a great starter. He would be a nice adition, but not an ultimate solution. Of course, Jarrod doesn't agree.
