In an expected move, the Raiders have announced that quarterback Carson Palmer has restructured his contract with the team. Interestingly, they announced the move via Twitter a sign the times have changed.
According to PFT, the team could create as much as $7.71 million in cap space if he dropped to the league minimum and converted the rest into a signing bonus. It's also possible that Palmer took less money. Terms have not been announced.
Three contracts restructured and now we are either under the cap or close to it. Where we really are depends on which report you believe, 10M or 20M over, hopefully the former. Let's net forget about the tag on Branch for another 6.2M. So, that would make us 16-26M over prior to the restructurings. We are either 5M over still or 5M under now.
Hopefully we sign Branch soon to a long term deal that will make him a lot more cap friendly this year.
@JarrodRollins It's hihghly expected everywhere a long term deal to be reached between Tyvon Branch and the Raiders. His expected cap hit after that deal is expected to be around 3 million so it's really getting better. Also, don't you forget Kamerion Wimbley is about to be cut and he's taking a 5 million with him. If this team's D would to become primarily a 3-4 defense, I wouldn't be that surprised if they tried Saughnessy to become an OLB (he has the speed and the athleticism) and just forget about Wimbley once and for all.
Shaughnessy is an interesting one. I think they will give him a go in camp to work on being a OLB in the 3-4 (if we are heading in that direction) and if not he will be traded for mid-round pick as he is in the last year of his contract also.
Another possibility is Trevor Scott. I really think Scott can excel with the right coaching and if he can stay healthy. Like when Marshall used him in those "Elephant" packages or whatever they were called.
Here is a great outline of all the restructures.
We save 9.34M with Palmer, 5.98M with Seymour and 5.84M with Huff for a total =21.16M all before cutting CJ, Wimbley Eugene and Henderson. Hopefully we restructure Kelly , Curry and Wimbley (even though it's a long shot). I also wouldn't mind getting CJ back at the minimum because we are so short at CB.
Ok... I'm not the biggest fan of how much Hue gave up for Carson Palmer. Anyway, this man is earning his stripes. If he just restructured is a good sign, but if he indeed would have taken a pay cut, that shows true commitment.
I have to agree. Not a fan at all of what was paid for Palmer and not much a fan of Palmer at all as a turnover prone QB, but mad respect for the guy for helping out the team reworking his salary especially if he took a pay cut. I almost expected him to try and force his way out again now that Hue had gone but that's not the case at all.
