According to multiple reports, the Raiders have shown interest in bringing veteran RB Cedric Benson in with the possibility of signing him to a contract. Benson, 29, has a lot of milage but is a big, strong back which may fit a need for the Raiders. He's thought of being a better fit in power scheme than the zone blocking scheme that the Raiders run.
On the surface, this move makes little sense as the Raiders already have a large stable of running backs all of which are younger and, potentially, more talented than Benson at this stage in his career. However, it seems likely that the Raiders are signing Benson as insurance. McKenzie has shown that he doesn't like to over pay and therefore Benson's contract - if he gets one - is likely to be for a lower amount where the team can cut him for no cost if he doesn't pan out.
If he seriously outperforms either Mike Goodson or Taiwan Jones, he can make his way on the roster and have earned it. He also can serve as an insurance policy if either Goodson or Jones gets injured in camp, a possibility that cannot be discounted.
Benson played in 15 games last season, rushing for 1067 yards on 273 carries, an average of 3.9 yards a carry. He also scored 6 TDs.
@AsherMathews Benson 273 ca. 1067 yrd. 3.9 avg. Bush 256 ca. 977 yrd. 3.8 avg. The point is to find Bush replacement #Raiders
The point is to field the best team possible. Don't think Benson is as good as Goodson or Jones but he can prove me wrong in camp @21David52
@AsherMathews Goodson and Jones have a role already, special teams. I don't see any of those guys touching the ball 10+ per game. Not 2012
@AsherMathews @21David52 Scheme has to be served as well. Is 2TE formation more important than 4Wide? Trades may be in Murphy/Ford's future
@AsherMathews @21David52 but I do agree that 4RB + 2FB's is covetous. (A Hue Jackson sin) Have to give defense some roster spots
@AsherMathews @21David52 camp/preseason sorts that stuff out. Gotta discern what we have & must test our assumptions about our starters
There are too many needs to carry that many RB/FBs. Last yr was inefficient to do so, shouldn't happen this yr either. @21David52
@AsherMathews I believe we had it like that last year DMC Bush Cartwright Bennett At FB Reece Tonga What's the issue now?
@AsherMathews it was a wasted spot given that in our power formation we subbed out TE for OT. SMH! If you use the players then its worth it
@AsherMathews I never liked carrying 4TE's especially when we limited out formations to the power 2TE, base 2RB and Singleback...
So you think the tm carries 4 RBs and 2 FBs? 6 out of 53 plyrs in backfield? If not who do you want cut to make room for Benson? @21David52
I have to disagree that this makes little sense on the surface. It makes perfect sense. Goodson and Jones by all accounts are backs whose style more closely remsembles McFadden. You had said this yourself Asher. Michael Bush was a power back, of which we still have not found a repalcement for. Reggie McKenzie acknowledged that in his recent round table discussion. Benson is that replacement power back that was lossed when Chicago signed Bush.
Make it happen Reggie!! Go Raiders!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It makes little sense because Benson isn't as good at this point in his career as the two others. If he's tabbed as a short yardage back, only, what's the point? Reece or Schmitt can do short yardage situation. Keeping a pure RB that cannot be explosive is a waste of a roster spot. Are the Raiders going to keep 4 RBs and 2 FBs? Probably not. So, if Benson makes the team it'll be over one of the other other players. Do you want Benson more than Goodson or Taiwan Jones? More than Reece or Schmitt? I do not. However, if he comes on and really blows it up, he can earn a spot. If Jones or Goodson get injured, he can be a decent backup option as well.
Benson has rushed for over 1,000 yards that last three years. What are you basing the statement that he won't be as good at this point in his career on? He has a much more solid track record to lean on than Goodson or Jones. Don't get me wrong, these guys seem to have great potential. But I refer to my favoirte quotation "Potential will get you fired". I would like to see more proven talent where it can be acquired as opposed to a team full of hopefuls. If some of these hoepfuls don't live up to the hope, where are we?and again, I refer to your earlier article where you made the point that Goodson and Jones are more aloog the lines of McFadden's style, burners. We still need a proven short yardage back. McKenzie himslef acknowledged that we do not have someone to fill in that role as Bush had done. I think Benson is the answer here.
@AsherMathews I think you are misisng the point a little with the yards per carry. What we need is a short yardage back that can do the pounding to wear down the defense. This will compliment McFadden by taking pressure off of him and tiring down the line so that McFadden has better opportunities to rip a long one off. The fact that he had a relativiely lower yards per carry, but still got a 1,000 yards proves to me that he is a reliabily durable back that can pound down the line and pick up the short yards when needed. We don't want McFadden doing that due to health concerns, for one, and two that just is not the type of back he is. As you pointed out, Godoson and Jones are more like McFadden. We need a short yardage back that is not like McFadden. The one to go after the 1 or two yards, and do it dirty! That is why I believe Benson would be a good pick up.
@Jososi I think to look only at his total yardage only is not a good indicator of his talent. He has crossed 1000 yards the last three years, yes. He's also carried the ball a ton in that time. His average yards per carry is below 4 the last two years. In 2010, it was 3.5.
I took a look other big backs from last year to get a sense if bigger backs have a lower yd/carry average and they do not. Or, at least, the good ones do not. Of the good big backs, the lowest avg yd/carry I saw was 4.2 and most were higher in the 4.4 or 4.5 range.
The highest avg yd per carry Benson has ever achieved in his career was 4.2 and that was in 2009. That was the only time in the last 5 seasons that he was higher than 4 yds/carry.
Benson came out of college a workhorse RB with a lot of carries. He has carried the ball in the NFL over 1500 times. That sort of work takes a toll. Plus he's 29, now and will be 30 before the season ends.
I think he's not been a productive back just that the Bengals continued to give the ball to him. He's done much less with each carry than his fellow RBs which indicates that he's not a great player.
In addition, he's been one of the most worked players and he's nearing the end of his career.
So, what I think makes sense is that the Raiders sign him - if the money is low and not guaranteed - and give him a chance in camp. If Taiwan Jones or Goodson don't seem to be able to cut it of if any of the 3 get injured he can be in the final squad as needed.
What I think is unlikely but I also hope doesn't happen is that he make it in solely on name recognition. He's on the downside of his career and he's never been that amazing. That type of player tends to fade fast.
@AsherMathews Maybe, you are correct in saying that he isn't as good at this point in his career but what you have is a player who doesn't miss games and gets yards (small yards per carry, yes, but Knapp actually likes this). Now, he would without doubt be backup to Dmac which will mean he should get less carries than in his time with Bengals thus meaning the should be able to keep his production at a high standard.
If he was a number 1 running back then I would have quite a few red flags.. but as he would be back up I really don't have any! In fact. We need a change of pace RB.. Goodson, Jones are burners and putting them in for Dmac doesnt change the plays at all. Benson will add another dimension.
And you say about do we want him more than Goodson? Goodson is fantastic on Twitter and good for the fans but as a player, we honestly haven't seen anything to wow us. Benson has and would be a better backup for Dmac than Mike but I could see us carrying all of them. With Dmac liable to go down, we'll need Goodson and Jones as well!
Benson is just a good move as far as I can tell.
@raidersbuzztap Check out my article on @GoodNplenty33 and why I think he's overlooked. http://t.co/C3Ymju49
