In a smart and somewhat expected move, the Raiders have brought back middle linebacker Ricky Brown; he was signed on Sunday to the Raiders' active roster after being cut by the Patriots. The Raiders then released offensive tackle Seth Wand to make room on the roster. The team also announced their practice squad.
Brown was the Raiders backup middle linebacker behind Kirk Morrison for four seasons in Oakland. Last season he backed up Rolando McClain at the position. The Raiders allowed him to leave as a free agent this offseason because they had found his replacement in second-year linebacker Travis Goethel. But for the second season in a row, Goethel went down with an injury.
Goethel being lost for the season left the Raiders' cupboard bare behind McClain at middle linebacker. They brought in recently waived Jeremy Leman for practice purposes and to play in the final preseason game. But in the end, they needed Ricky Brown back.
Brown is familiar with the Raiders and his signing immediately becomes one of the more important ones this camp. The team had inquired about former Seahawk Lofa Tatupu but he was most likely not completely healthy and left without an offer. Leman is familiar with Raiders' defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan as he was his middle linebacker while Bresnahan was the defensive coordinator for the Florida Tuskers of the UFL. But Leman was clearly not ready or simply not talented enough to play middle linebacker for the Raiders.
Leman joins the practice squad along with rookies CB Sterling Moore, DE Mason Brodine, DT Jamie Cumbie, and WR Eddie McGee. Coming back for a second stint on the Raiders' practice squad are OL Alex Parsons, FB Manase Tonga, and TE Kevin Brock.

i can see barnes costing us the denver game with a few false starts when dumerville lines up over him on 3rd and long throughout the game!
I guess Brown was the easy choice being a former Raider, but there have got to be better options out there!
Also how about adding Max Jean-Gilles for some OL depth
I hear Brown and I think of the Jags game last season - when he filled in for McClain .. the whole thing fell apart ... gulp ...
Have a feeling that Lito will be brought back after week 1. Boyd is going to be molded into the second coming of Jarrod Cooper. He and Joe Porter are core special teamers and hopefully they can make up for the voids left by the release of Isaiah and Sam, two special aces, in consecutive years.
Was wondering who would be our backup Mike until we signed Ricky. He can play all 3 LB spots so he can provide good depth.
Don't know how Nick Miller still has a spot on this team, his spot should be occupied by Sterling Moore.
Would seem that either Gholston, Everette Brown, Aaron Maybin or Phillip Hunt could be too much to let go for Big Al, so imo likely one would be signed - in order to add depth, and to try and convert to OLB..
Quan Sturdivant was waived as well - really like him, not quite sure why he was let go, could be a back-up to Death Ro, he's a beast vs the run!
Surprising cut of Stevie, but he didn't look too good - neither did Boyd, but they must figure he can play Will if needed as well, why he got the edge! uckily we got Sterling on the PS!
Really not sold on the pronounced Oline of Veld - Wiz Jr - Satele - Carlisle - Barnes --- especially Barnes has looked like a rookie with penalties and difficulties with simple speedmoves and turns of direction, so sad we don't have anything the coaches consider a better option! Sad!
@massillonraider and we've got to beat Denver as I dont think they are strong at all this year. If we cant take advantage of their OL and DL we are in real trouble. And we should really. Apart from Clady on their OL and Dumervil on D we should dominate up front. Even with our secondary we should be able to get enough pressure on Orton and get a confidence boosting win.
@oaklandraider Couldn't agree more. We've got to move on from the likes of Ricky Brown. It's depth for depths' sake, not quality. If he gets in the game then I dont like our chances if the RB gets past our D-Line. The guy has done nothing to distinguish himself while being a Raider.
