This game was over as soon as it began. The first place Raiders came in as the underdog to the last place Dolphins much to the dismay of Raider fans. But the Dolphins showed very quickly why they were favored and it was semantics after that on the way to a 34-14 rout of the Raiders.
After holding the Raiders to a three and out on their first possession, the Dolphins marched down the field to begin with a field goal on their first drive. Then another Raider three and out followed by another Dolphin drive ending in a field goal. The game was midway through the first quarter and it was apparent the Dolphins were going to have their way with the Raiders on both sides of the ball.
On the next Raider possession, they would get their first first down of the day. But the once promising looking drive ended with the Raiders traveling backward while Palmer faced pressure on every play and offensive line penalties began to stack up. That drive ended befittingly with a sack on Palmer.
While the best response the Raiders could muster was a couple of first downs, the Dolphins responded to that with their first touchdown of the day to go up 13-0. That would be the score going into halftime. But while 13-0 isn't a huge margin, it was a score based on almost complete domination. The Raiders could not stop Reggie Bush as he ran ten times for 79 yards in the first half. The Raiders have their own Bush, but Michael was able to pick up just five yards on five carries.
Then the third quarter began and things really got out of hand for the Raiders.
The Dolphins took the opening kickoff 78 yards to the Raider 25 yard line. Two plays later, Stanford Routt was called for pass interference in the end zone. The Dolphins would set up with first and goal from the one yard line and on the next play, Bush would walk in untouched for an easy touchdown.
A five play and out series by the Raiders set up a long touchdown drive by the Dolphins. Then the Raiders' next possession lasted two plays when Palmer threw high to Louis Murphy and it was tipped and intercepted. Dolphins Kevin Burnett came down with it and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown and a resounding 34-0 Dolphin lead.
From there, the Dolphins were content to keep it on the ground through much of the fourth quarter and run clock. The Raiders were able to put up two garbage touchdowns to make it look a little less embarrassing than it really was.
The loss combined with a win by the Broncos in Minnesota ties the Raiders with the Broncos for first place in the AFC West (7-5). The Broncos own the tiebreaker at this point as they are 3-2 in the AFC West and Raiders are 2-2.
After the assault and gun charge in Alabama this week, Rolando McClain did not get the start but was in the game after the first couple of plays and played the majority of the snaps at middle linebacker.
The Raiders travel to Green Bay next week in a game that has been moved to a 1pm start.
|Oakland Raiders (7-4-0)||Miami Dolphins (3-8-0)|
This Raider team is incredibally talented and is capable of beating any team in this league, including the Green Bay Packers. However, this team is also very fragile, mentally, and I am 100% certain that the Rolando McClain incident played a big part in this loss. The Raiders were distracted, and they did not have their focus like they did against Chicago and Minnesota. Young teams get distracted easily, and the Raiders are a team on the rise who will have to learn how to deal with distractions. It's all part of the maturation process.....The Raiders, when mentally focused, will beat the Dolphins 8 times out of 10. We gave Miami this game and thank Rolando McClain for helping Miami on this one...
The Raiders definitely miss Darren McFadden, but I still think Carson Palmer is the right quarterback for this team. Palmer put up almost 300 yards passing, and he was still competing at the end of the game, showing outstanding leadership ability despite the fact that Miami won the game. Palmer also was without his two biggest playmakers in Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore, making his numbers that much more impressive... DHB is a good short yardage receiver, but without Moore and Ford, the receiving loses balance, and that balance is needed to get our passing attack on track...
The D won the game for us last week- three int's- except for the long pass to Knox they played good. The offense let us down this week. 13 points is all they gave up in the first half- I'm not sure that we had that many yards on offense. I don't like Bren either but you can't pin this one him. We do play the same man scheme every game- not hard for opponents to game plan. I think we'll hire a GM and then hire a D coordinator.
This offense needs 2 players back urgently: McFadden and Jason Campbell. I was never fond of the Palmer trade and his 1-2 good passes a game are not enough to make up for the rest of his average - crappy passing. McFadden was mean while good for at least 1 good long run a game to make our rushing attack seem a lot better than it is. No knock on Bush, but he needs good power blockers in front of him and that is something we are lacking right now.
Yeah, I'm not sure it has to be Del Rio. I would also think of promoting Mike Wauffle who actuallly made this beast-like Defensive Line. I don't really care if they just promote the janitor to DC, but it has to happen now. Green Bay will victimize this defense and maybe there is no way to help it. But then it is Detroit at home and Megatron qill eat up alive those corners, and then it is KC at KC and we need some payback from that humiliation at home. And then it is San diego and it would suck to be the team who lost to Norv Turner in his last day as Head Coach... Whatever is the change it must happen now or this year will end up being a huge blooper. The offense needs some adjustments and I would definitely send Khalif Barnes back to the shitty hole where he belongs, but the offense is still scoring. Ok Hue has made some bad calls but it still has worked enough to have some points, enough to win against some mediocre teams anyway, but not even Tom Brady or Peyton Manning can win if the defense can't keep the other team from score AT LEAST ONCE!!!
Fire Bresnahan now and bring in Jack Del Rio.... The defense can't possibly suck worse with a new DC than it does with Bresnahan. Get Del Rio now so the defense can get a head start on learning his playbook for next year. I honestly see Oakland playing themselves out of the playoffs with Hue Jackson's lame play calling and Bresnahan's piss poor defense.
The offense gets in a rhythm when they can have the ball. But it's hard when the defense can force any turnovers or punts. The defense today forced zero turnovers and I think Miami only punted like once.
Bresnahan sucks so bad. He reminds me when Art Shell brought back Greg Knapp to be the OC back in 2006.
The DC is supposed to game plan for what should stop the opposing team, not what would allow them to score on you at will. Bresnahan's play calling constantly has the defense out of position with his horrendous playcalling and don't get me started on his God awful prevent defense....
Also, at this point, I really have to call into question Hue's playcalling and his decision to hold out injured players for as long as he has and about who he starts. Hue's 2nd half playcalling has sucked all season long and some games he just can't get the offense going at all. Why is Satele and Barnes even still starting? Satele is a revolving door and Barnes is a penalty magnet. Why Is Bruce Campbell always inactive? Don't see why he can't start at RT over Barnes. I mean, he can't be any worse.
Fire Bresnahab now and hire Del Rio. Really, could it be any worse?
I can kind of give the offense a slide as there are alot of injuries. I really do expect this to be a dominating offense once we can get everyone back healthy. that is if we get everyone back healthy.
The defense on the other hand has been shaky all year. Even our wins seemed to have been inspite of the defense, not because of it.
I hope something can work out from this point out as I am tired of saying next year. I really wanted the Raiders to take the division this year. Even if they went out in the first game, it would still show a steady progress, going 8 and 8, and then a winning season and the division. It is such a bummer that I cannot feel confident of this happening.
Alright, don't know what you guys think but the defense is sucking. I'm not sure if we could actually get Jack del Rio as our DC but my grandma could do it better than Bersnahan. This game was humiliating. I mean, you could expect Miami's defense playing great, but Matt Moore and Reggie Bush made Raider's Defense look like a highschool defense. And I mean it, the offense was having a bad day already, but for the first 3 quarters Oakland stopped Miami's offense from scoring just once!!! That is shameful!!!! Next week we go to Green Bay, that doesn't sound promissing
Outside of our last 2 drives, I was really disappointed in our offense. Our offensive line was just not very good. I haven't liked Barnes for quite sometime but this was one of his worst games. I did not like that we didn't use marcel reece much until the end. My biggest disappointment was Chuck B, yet again. I really don't know what he game plans for. I watch our games and it seems like he never wants to watch previous tapes and emulate what other teams did for success. Its like he makes a random plan and sticks to it. Hopefully when we go D coordinator shopping that Del Rio will be available. My mind does often wonder would we have been better off keeping Marshall? Especially, with the freedom that it looks like he would have had.Green Bay scares me as well as Detroit coming down the stretch. Shit....to be honest if we play like this defensively, we might not win another game. I am very disappointed. I mean this game meant so much with Tebow doing the unthinkable. I'm feel so sick just writing this .
@Spartacus Yeah, I'm with you. Palmer has made this offense compete without most of it's stars. Bush is good, but that 1-2 that McFadden and Bush used to make was devastating. Ford and Moore haas been out too many games but they are incredibly talented. And God knows that I think Bruce Campbell or Joseph Barksdale, or even Stephon Heyer deserves a chance at RT and show if the can stay without mistakes longer than Khalif Barnes, but the thing with Palmer is he is being a great leader. Campbell was good at not making mistakes, he wasn't gonna loose a game with any bad decisions, but he lacked that spark, that shine I see every snap with Palmer that makes mr think we can win the game. He's a true leader and I think he might have been to expensive, but right now he's the right QB for the Raiders.
@Spartacus I agree. I cannot see wanting Campbell back. This offense is without its most important playmakers. In fact, we have not had a full complement on the offensive side of the ball at all this year. I really do believe that once we have Ford, Moore, McFadden, Reece and Palmer all working together this will be a wicked sick offense.
The defense on the other hand has been shaky all year. They have given up two games we clearly should have won(Denver and Buffalo), and they had kept me biting my nails to the very end on just about every game that was won. I think the talent is there, but the defensive philosophy is suspect. Bresnahan likes to cruise to wins once there is a lead. He does not seem to take into account the team he is goign up against in his planning at all. I just don't ahve any faith in him as a DC.
I agree with most of your points. I think Carson was a good move, the only beef I have with him so far is that he seems to be fragile in the pocket when someone gets their hand on him, he plays as if he's trying too hard to avoid injury, one slap on the pads and he rolls over and drops. Regarding Rolando, I don't believe that whole debacle had anything to do with giving up all those plays. Chuck needs to go!
@DylanAlexander Dude, I respect your thoughts but I just don't know what you mean when you say D won last week's game. They got 3 picks from a first time ever starter and yet they let him get 254 yards and scoring two touchdowns. They got run over, the bears had 172 yards running (50 of them cam from Hanie, so you may say he Tebowed us) and they scored 20 points. Here are the numbers they got vs. KC this week: 93 yards on the ground, Hanie had just 143 yards and got picked 3 times and the most important they just scored 3 points. D was pretty shaky that game and I'd hate to think what could have happened if Cuttler (who mae our life a living hell when he playd for the donkeys) hadn't been out. I see your point of getting a new GM first, but our D is collapsing now. I don't really mean the offense has been flawless, they got a fair share of the guilt against Miami, but seriously, Dolphins didn't have to punt until 3rd quarter, not even once during the first half they sent out the punt formation. By that time the game was already decided.
Campbell is not better tha Palmer. At this point when Campbell gets back he will be a backup. Who we really need back is Ford, Moore and McFaden
No way I'd start Campbell over Carson. They both flop as soon as theres hands on them. Whatever happened to the Hostetlers who fought to stay upright and complete plays? Campbell would not have faired any better with all that pressure.
Not sure if making the switch now would be a good idea, for the most part, the D has managed to keep it close enough for the offense, that andcHue's nifty play calling. Bringing in someone new to run Chucks sysyem or even promote wpuld be taking a step backwards. I think it can still get worse if a switch is made during the season. I like your idea on promoting mike wauffle or even beikert or the janitor but at the end of the season. I like having to move Wiz to center but we don't have enough development to fill in our weak areas. I really don't see us making very far this year although I would love to wrong. I think next year can be our year for obvious reasons. New D coordinator, Carson will be there all year, and hopefully everyone will be healthy. Even when everyone comes back this year I just can't see the D taking us to a championship unless of course I'm believing in miracles.
Rushing players from back from injury isn't going to help and is a recipe for disaster as well. But we need changes to the OL urgent and there is no reason why these cannot be made. Wiz needs to be the starting Center and Heyer / Barksdale / Bruce Campbell need to be fighting it out for the LG and RT positions. The whole year this OL has actually been quite average at run blocking with the only thing that seemed to save them was McFadden and / or Bush breaking one big run each game to pad the stats.
I don't think Del Rio would be willingly to come in as DC for the rest of the year. Maybe at the end of the year, but I can see him testing the waters trying to get another HC gig first. But I do agree that Chuck needs to go. I was a little hesitant of firing him this late in the season but things need to change. If he does get fired though I think a more likely option would be promoting Waufle to DC or even Biekert.
@Jososi At 1st when people said it would be a bad thing to hire del rio now and that it would take time to learn with him; I was on bored that would be a bad idea. Then I realized he runs a 4-3. Also defense is a lot easier to get a hold of than offense. Since he runs the same base that we do, then I could see him making changes quick and fast. I strongly feel that its simply our play selection that is killing us. With Del Rio the jags were top 15 against the run this year and top 5 against the pass. So fuck it. I'm in favor of del rio now. Especially this week against a team that we probably will lose to anyway. It will give him a trial week to manipulate our d. Call Del Rio tomorrow!
@antonioswancy Agreed! Barnes had a terrible game and Chuck B has been terrible all year long. I expect some major actions or we will get 90 points fro Green Bay next week
I see Dylans point on the D. Without those turnovers the game ends differently. Not to say they played great but they kept giving the offense opportunities to make a difference, good thing Jano was up for it. But the D for Miami was horrific. Good Ds don't play half a game, they finish. The offense, starting with the line, was pretty awful. With all the injuries the team seems to have lost it's identity although I believe they can still with who they have.
@Raidah@Black_Nightmare Bresnahan sucks so bad at his defensive play calling that bringing in a new guy now would be an improvement. I don't get why he allows the QBs to run for so much against us. When is he gonna realize that he can't call plays that just spreads everyone so far out so often. That is why the QBs can take off and run. He needs to keep some LBers home to protect the middle.
He is the DC version of Greg Knapp.....
@Raidah Well, to quote one of the greatest minds of the 90's television, Fox Mulder (yeah, I'm gonna break the sarcasm detector), "I want to believe". I also think it will take a miracle for us to go and become Superbowl champions this year, but I really think we could be better than we are right now. Last year, Cowboys sucked under Wade Phillips (and I think that was just because they were a bunch of slacks) and got better under Jason Garret. I think a better play caller and most of all, a better role model could really improve this D.
@nilbymouth DMac was only supposed to be out for 2-3 weeks, It's been 5 now.
Wiz Needs to be the starting center cuz Satele sucks bad. Barnes need to be benched as well. Heyer, Barksdale, and Campbell do need to start more. When a OL guy starts getting beat a lot and drawing penalties, why keep him in? Bench the fat bastard and play someone else.
I think the biggest problem with the defense is Bresnahan. The talent is there, but the discipline and the play-calling is not. The plays that Bresnahan calls constantly has the defense out of position
@Black_Nightmare Yah, I almost couldn't watch the whole game. If it wasn't for those last 2 drives; I might have thrown up. The Green Bay game has all the makings of a blow out if we dont make changes. Also, I hate to do it but I really think we just have to hope Tebow's luck runs out. I definitely don't hate the donks losing but I hate having to hope another team chokes when we should have just taken care of business. At this rate my mind tells me maybe we shouldn't go to the playoffs. I mean if we go and get blown out like KC did last year then it's kind of pointless. This has been one roller coaster season. Like you said, major actions need to happen!
@Black_Nightmare @Raidah I think the D really gave up once Seymore got kicked out of the game. There is no doubt we need and will have a new D coordinator once the season is over. My point was without the 3 pics- especially Kam's at the end of the first half- we lose to the Bears. It is also really hard to play Defence when your offense keeps going three and out.I just don't feel the Miami game was all on Bren.I hope I don't sound like I'm supporting him - I was mad when I read he was back, I just feel that there is plenty of blame to go around and singling Bren out on this one is unfair. I do agree his D calls are pissing away our best division title chance in almost a decade. If we lose out to Tebow- I don't even want to think about it.
@Raidah@DylanAlexander Yeah, those turnovers were key on that game, but also were all the other plays they didn't make, I mean, that pass to Knox, I mean those carries from Forte and Barber and Hanie, I mean those touchdown passes. The bears still scored 20 and it was a close game in the end. D did a good job on those picks but they couldn't keep the good job all the game, that's why i say they were shaky. I totally agree with you Raidah when you say good D's don't play half a game, and the don't play half a season or every other game, they are consistently good. This Raider team has a lot of talent and they ain't being coached to their full potential, but I see Hue's learning from his mistakes (he's not going for it on 4th down every time now). Offense had a horrific game last sunday, even when I expected Miami's D to play nice, this was just embarrasing, but I think of those Pittsburgh Steelers from the 90's with such a crappy offense and winning 12 games a year because of their great defense, and I see our offense with such a great potential and even showing glimpses of greatness sometimes, and then I seeour defense wich atually was so promissing last year and they took a huge step back this year, it just breaks my silver and black heart
